Molly's Monday Machinations - International Rules and AFLPA wanting Free Agency

This week discuss the Internation rules after the first game and the AFL Players Association and their investigation into Free Agency.
I look at the International Rules, the great result by Australia and the argument that the All Australian Team should be used and that not doing so cheapens the Australian Jumper.

The Free agency is an interesting issue and one that I really can't see getting up. I think there would be some unwanted side effects (extra trading, loss of loyalty and need for changes to other rules link the trading rules). Genreally I think it would be extremely unpopular with Fans. But listen in for my full thoughts.

Hawks get picks 14 (Power) and 18 (Eagles via Roos)
Pick 54 went to Port but not sure what happens to that as the Power has gone off at trade Head Quarters.

Ted Richards is a Swan

Essendon Trade Richards as expected. Sydney pick up there second player of the trade period.

Essendon trades Richards to Sydney

Essendon has completed its second trade deal of the week with Ted Richards to become a Sydney Swan next season. The Bombers traded Richards and draft selection 55 in exchange for draft selection 19 and 51. The trade now means Essendon has another first round draft pick to go with its first selection at number seven.

This will be insurance for the Fact that they will probably lose Jason Sandington.

Another Trade done - McConnell dealt to Kangaroos

Well, Well. Another trade done. The Kangaroo's get Daniel McConnell and selection no. 18, West Coast has received selections 13 and 29.

McConnell dealt to Kangaroos:

West Coast Eagles recruiting manager Trevor Woodhouse was pleased with the exchange.

“We’re happy with that outcome,” he said. “Moving five spots up in the first selection, five in the second selection and 16 in the third selection, after finishing runner-up in the competition, puts us in another good position for our drafting.”

I wonder what this means for the Roo's interest in Hay? This might strengthen the resolve over wanting to get Motlop to Brisbane for Pick 9.
Will have to wait and see.

Essendon recruiting manager Adrian Dodoro said the club was rapt to gain Cole after it initially wanted to pick him up four years ago.

First Trade done!!! Watts traded to St Kilda

Well it was Tuesday before 1pm and the first trade done! Adelaide have sent Furgus Watts to the Saints for there 1st Round pick, number 17.

Watts traded to St Kilda

St Kilda has won the services of Adelaide forward Fergus Watts in exchange for their first round selection - No.17 overall - to complete the first deal of the 2005 trade period.

This is one of the big trades that need anyone elses involvement so was done early.

Mike Sheahan's Top 50 in the Herald-Sun

Mike Sheahan has released his end of year top 50 so ready for the debate to start (sure the boys on Footytalk.com.au will discuss it in there next show). Ben Cousins deservedly gets top billing, with Barry Hall a close 2nd.

For the Hawks, three made it. Luke Hodge entered in the top ten at number 8, joining Judd (3) and Luke Ball (6). You would remember that these 3 made up the top 3 in the AFL Draft of 2001 (often referred to as the Super Draft). Spider came in at 13, six spots lower then Dean Cox who tipped him out for All-Australian Ruckman.

The last Hawk to make it? Trent Croad at number 40 is a good reward for a great year.

From the AFL Blog: Who to draft?

Another entry on the AFL blog this time on the Draft. Let me take time to again plea to Telstra/AFL.Com.au: "Please add RSS feed to the blog!".

Who to draft?

"They're all likely types from good families.

On 26 November, they'll be precisely the players their clubs were looking for and in all likelihood, the 16 AFL recruiting managers will look at their new recruits and not believe their good fortune at how they were still available when it came time to pick."

Looking forward to the draft. Look for my Hawks to have at least 3 First round picks (probably 3 in top 13, maybe 4 if the Hawks Trade Hay to the Roos (after the Roos trade Motlop to Brisbane for pick 8)). I believe that they are going to show the Draft Live on Free-to-Air and I for one will be watching.

You feel terrible for the West Coast pair, robbed of a Grand Final apperance through injury.

Sydney's Stuart Maxfield is in the same boat.

Now the big one...

So now for the big question: who will win the 2005 AFL Grand Final?

Strong arguments can be mounted for both teams. Despite stumbling towards the end of the season, West Coast was the best team all year. The Eagles are motored by a brilliant midfield and have enough talent in the key positions to win both week.

The best since when...

I'm a Hawthorn supporter, so I'd nominally place the 1989 Hawthorn win over Geelong ahead of this as the greatest grand final since 1970.

Congratulations to the Swans and bring on trade week.

From the AFL Blog: Barry gets to play

I think their starting to struggle over at the AFL Blog. This is pretty much their whole post ( I Thought I'd better leave out a line in case I was accused of just stealing their post).

Barry gets to play:

"Barry Hall is playing in the Grand Final, with the new tribunal system giving the Swans every opportunity to have his suspension reduced to a reprimand."

Wow guys, I am blown away by this insight. This would have been a much better post if they had an RSS feed that would have automatically brought the result to my RSS Reader and if they had this post up as soon as it happened. Like this its useless.

On the Hall issue its self, I discussed it in my Mollys Monday Machination (new host, New RSS of just the podast), Barry was dumb but I think this result is fine (although I think they need to clean up the in play/behind play). The problem my come next year when/if Barry does the same thing next year and gets 2 or 3 weeks due to the held over points and the extra loading for having a bad record. This is already causing confusion where people are saying that results are inconsistent when sometimes its this bad record/good record loading.

The AFL Blogs entry for Monday has a look at the build up to the Grand Final and the fact that Melbourne is still into it even though no truly Melbourne team is left (you could argue that the Swans are still partially South Melbourne):

I have to say I am thinking of taking my son down to some of the celebrations as I have take some time off and he is really into footy at the moment, I think he might get a buzz even if there aren't any Hawks involved (although still hoping that Hodgy (Luke Hodge) might be doing the rounds as the Brownlow Medalist).

From the AFL Blog: A Saintly post-mortem

What a heart breaking loss for the Saints, maybe just as heart breaking as the loss for the Cats last week. The scores weren't as close and the Swan's totally out classed them in the end but the Saints where expected to do better. The AFL Blog looked at the Saints in one of the latest posts.

A Saintly post-mortem :
"So now the post-mortems start for the Saints. Grant Thomas will no doubt have his bashers, because Thomas-bashing is a favourite pastime for people inside footy and outside, as well."

I can't help wondering if they should have been more careful with the plays they brought back from injures. I guess its easy after the fact but I did think it before the game. A Swans v Eagles Grand Final show be interesting. This week will see an interesting start with the Brownlow but more importantly will be to see if Barry Hall plays or if he is rubbed out.

The mejar (as the boys over at www.footytalk.com.au would say) are at it again. The trade rumors have started and the AFL Blog had a post all about it. The silly season gets underway...: "Trade talk usually goes hand-in-hand with the finals, but this year it had taken a back seat. Until today. Thursday's papers are full of trade talk, with the preliminary maneuvering under way ahead of the official trade week from 3-7 October. Hawthorn is front and centre of trade speculation once again, with The Age, the Herald Sun and The Australian all tipping that full-back Jonathan Hay, an All Australian as recently as 2001, is headed out the door." There is much talk from the Hawks fans (I am a Hawks fan) at the Hawk Headquarters message board that they would be happy for Hay to go but want Crawf to stay. I am not going to come out and say that this is total crap and neither will be traded (as I had egg on my face when Croad was traded in 2001) but surely we would only be in listening mode and it would take a lot to get the Hawks to part with two plays that have both been All-Australians in the past. Probably the biggest surprise to me is that one of the teams that gets named is Essendon. I really find it hard to see what benefit getting Crawf would have to their side. It might push them back into the finals for a year or two but I hardly think that it will take them to a flag! Surely they would be better server shopping around some of their older players in the hope that they could inject a big helping of youth! Getting Crawf would not only add his age to their list but Hawthorn would surely want to get young players (Keppler Bradley would be who I would be pushing for) and/or early draft picks. Crawf being under contract, I wouldn't let him go for nothing even if he isn't happy at the Hawks. That's just my two cents. I am sure more rumors will follow. What do you think? Been a busy week and fallen behind following the AFL's blog. This post they look at St Kilda's injury concerns and what they might do.

St Kilda's selection poser:

"With St Kilda looking set to welcome back key trio Max Hudghton, Matt Maguire and Brendon Goddard from injury for Friday night's preliminary final against Sydney at the MCG, the key question is who makes way from the team which performed so magnificently to beat Adelaide at AAMI Stadium in the qualifying final."

The other thing they have to worry about is not bringing to many injured players in to there team. I have seen teams play well with injures, bring a whole heap of players in that are returning from injury and then do down hill quickly. Lets hope they are smart with this as I would love to see them make the Grand Final (even though I will get brief from my Father-in-Law).

How the mighty have fallen. First the Lions ravaged by injuries miss the finals and now Port out in the second week of the finals to cross town rival, the Adelaide Crows.

"Port Adelaide is now a club with much thinking to do.Port looked great over the last few weeks of the season before running into the Crows, and it may be that Mark Williams decides to keep faith in most of the blokes who finished the season reasonably well and led the club to the flag the year before."

To me, they need to start again with youth. Go for young players and start again. There are very few trade bargains to be had and the Draft is the place to start again.

Fantastic final quarters:"Nick Davis may not have written his names into the history books with his four-goal final quarter against Geelong on Friday night, but he has etched himself a name in football folklore."

My Heart goes out to the Geelong supports (including my Dad). The team played fairly well but Rex Hunt put on the Radio on Saturday, they can't be happy with their result and it wasn't a good effort because they lost. These are strong thoughts but internally in the club this has to be their mindset. In dealing with the press, they can take a softer line and say it was a good effort, but really need to rise above this and move forward.

"What was the most contentious All-Australian selection?

For mine, it has to be the exclusion of Melbourne goalsneak Russell Robertson.

If ever a player's form over a season entitled him to be selected in a certain position in the All-Australian team it was Robertson in the forward pocket of the 2005 team."

I have to say Mark Williams of Hawthorn (but I am biased). He had a Fantastic, lead the Coleman medal for most of the year and this in a side that really didn't deliver the ball well to him.

On the AA team, Congrats to the 3 (yes Three) Hawks that made it, Hodgy, Spider and Croady. Well deserved (not sure how people are saying anyone had a better year then him at CHB). You add the 2 Hawks unlucky to miss out (Mitchell due to injury and Williams just overlooked (although injury at the end of the year as well)) and the future looks bright for the hawks.

Latest Toyota Ad - Dermott and the 1989 Grand Final

Well the very entertaining Toyota Classic footy Moments has released another Ad and this time looks at the "Bone Crashing Grand final of 1989". This was a classic between my Mighty Hawks and the Cats. It was a very physical match in which one of the Hawks, Diper, played out the game with a punctured lung and another, Dermott, took a huge hit. This ad looks at this incident. You can find the ad here. Probably funniest for the actor/item used to represent the person hitting Dermott!

AFL Site now Blogging - Where's the RSS feed? - What a Game

Well finals are here in the AFL (and unfortunately the Hawks aren't in them, will have wait for Brownlow Night and then onto the Draft) and the AFL site (run by Telstra is Blogging). This is good to see (maybe they might have a podcast in future) but they missed the point to have an RSS feed! Here a copy of one of them and I will link to more in future:

You couldn't ask for a better match to start the 2005 finals series. There were heroes, villains and plenty of what-ifs to contemplate in the wash-up. And it didn't need to be a shoot-out, to still be a classic. Just a few random thoughts:

In the article in Herald Sun entitled "Eddie adds fuel to comments furor", the following is reported:

"It's not necessarily whether they did anything wrong, but was it was actually said . . . well, I heard that remark," McGuire said.
". . . $20,000 and four, which I took as inference to it has cost him, being (St Kilda coach) Grant Thomas, $20,000 and the four (premiership) points."

Eddie, you got it all wrong, they didn't say 20 and 4, they said 24. You know the Channel Seven TV Series starring Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bruer. Perhaps they were discussing how they miss the end of Millionaire to make sure they catch it.

Any way, another case of Media beat up!

Umpire Gate: Has there been a bigger Media beat up

Crap, Crap, Crap, Crap, Crap.

That's what my brother would say if he agreed with me (I haven't seen him to find out his thought, just love his quote) on the hole "...whispers in sky" (as used in the Herald Sun headline on Tuesday 23/8, which in itself is misleading as the comments where made on the Ground before take-off) affair that the media, lead by Tony "What is Ethics, could you spell that for me" Jones of Channel 9, have been salaving over. If this isn't the biggest beat up since the Jews told Pontius Pilate that Jesus was a bad man, then I aint here.

The truth comes out in the article Jones actually said `Gee, how about you blokes tonight?' as they were boarding there plane. Not just boarding there plane, but boarding the plane after running good knows how far, being abused most of the time and, get this, at MIDNIGHT(!!!) with a solid 3 odd hour flight ahead of them to land (assuming they are talking Midnight Perth time, and I believe they are) at 5am ish in the morning.

So lets get this in context before we go on. Some media hack (i.e. Jones), comes up with the wholly original line, having a sligh dig at them (maybe friendly, maybe not) and there response was "Now I know what it's like to have a victory." If it where me, I would have probably had a go (well actually probably not, but would have been pretty pissed). So again lets get this straight. After having 30,000 odd thousand people telling them how bad they are, they give Jones the verbal flip off by saying what they said.

Now heres the great thing. Mr Ethics, Mr I can't get ahead in this job and we mighten have the Footy in a couple of years so I will probably be out of job, Mr how the heel did that Hutchy get so far ahead of me in the Footy media world, Mr etc, Mr etc, decides that he is going to go, like a sniveling little kid and tell everyone about it. And not only that (from my hearing of reports) pretty much out of context.

Well to Quote a famous man: "Shame, Shame, Shame". This guy, Mr Ethics (Tony Jones) is the same guy choose to ignore a pact (whether implict pact or explict) not to say anything about a Footballer suffering from the very real and serious condition of deprection til after a press conferencec organised by the plays club and put it all over the evening news, thinking what a big man he was for breaking the story! Well Mr Ethics, your not a big man, your a very little, petty, pretended of a journalist and you will be found out! Hopefully as more and more people hear the true context of the coments, they will see how much the media has blow this totally out of the water.

I really can't wait to listen to my buddies over at Footytalk.com.au and there podcast for this week, which is sure to touch on this (not least that I made this my Molly’s Monday Machinations (if they use it, will publish after the show is released)).

These are my thoughts, don't be affairred to comment.

New President at the Hawks?

Just listening to SEN and they reported that Jeff Kennett will be named the new President of the Mighty Hawks. Will be interested if this comes to pass!

Update: SEN pointed out (rightly) that he can only be put up and endorsed as it would have to go to the members.

MMM: The Draft, Priority picks and Draft Lotto

Hi all,

Here is my Molly’s Mondays Machinations as appears on www.footytalk.com.au. Can't wait to here what the boys have to say on this issue:

Many people are speculating about teams Throwing games, laying down or picking sides deliberately to get a Priority Pick in the draft. Well, any one saying that just need to look at two of the results in the last round to see that this doesn't seem to be the case. The two teams most likely to get a PP were the Hawks and the Blues yet both sides won on the weekend and have really fought hard over past weeks. And as a fan of one of these sides (the Mighty Hawks) I definitely don't want to see that.

Yes I want to see the kids played but not to lose the games. I want to see the young kids improve. Nothing better then seeing Buddy (Franklin) take on a few guys with his pace.

But what about the PP, should they be removed, reworked? Evidence to me, shows that they shouldn't. In the last few years, teams that get these picks and use them as intended (to stock a few young players in a hurry) and move up the ladder for the ultimate result of having 16 different premiers in 16 years. There is an argument to have the calculation work over multiple years but is this needed? St Kilda was the last team to spend extended time in the PP zone and they were only there for 2 odd years (in which one of their picks was injured) and then got the first pick by luck (due to the Blues stupidity (sorry Disco, there's no other way to put it)). And who wants to live the year as the wooden spooners to get a PP. This year there is a chance (if the three bottom teams find a win each, which Blues and hawks have a good chance to beat Bombers and Richmond and Collingwood (has to be favorite for the Spoon) would need to beat the bullies).

The other argument, that we are rewarding teams for losing (silly way to look at it) and we should have a Lottery system (like the NBA). From my impression of the NBA's system, it isn't a good idea. In the NBA, all teams that don’t make the Playoffs (read Finals) get ping pong balls in the lotto. The lower you finish the more balls you get. Only the first three spots are up for grabs. So the worst the worst team could pick is 4. But the real problem is that it is possible for a team that misses the finals by a small margin to get the 1st pick.

Lets look at this within the AFL. In 2002 the hawks won 12 matches and missed out on the finals. The same year the Saints won 11 matches and finished 10th. In a Draft lotto, it is possible (unlikely) that they would but possible, that they could pick one and two. This hasn't (to my knowledge) happened but teams that just missed out in the NBA have got the 1st pick. The Orlando Magic got 1st pick two years in a row (Shaq and then Penny Hardaway) and then got to the Grand Finals in the next 2 years. San Antino Spurs dropped out of the playoffs after being very close to the finals because their superstar was injured and picked up Tim Ducan and have since won 2 to 3 Championships since then. In this time, the LA clippers have stayed close to the bottom of the table and only once had the top pick. The lotto doesn't work.

Where it would work for the AFL is in the Preseason Draft (i.e. Veterans draft). This would stop the bottom team just getting the best player without having to give anything to the team he is coming from. There have been years where this has happened (some would argue that St Kilda got a lot of success from this) and the teams have given players up for nothing (3rd, 4th round picks to get something for them). It would be better if there was a lotto so that teams wouldn't rely that the player they want would be available in the Preseason draft.

Any way, Just some thoughts.

Interstate Preliminary finals: My thoughts

Its Monday, so here's my opinion piece!

Finals and the who gets a home final. I am sick of the mejar (as the boys (Disco and the Exposition) at footytalk.com.au would say) saying that when there is two interstate teams that finish 1 & 2 and win the first week of the finals that the 2nd place team deserves a home final! They don't. They also say they have earned the home final! They haven't!

It has been clear for the last 4 odd years (or how ever long the current contract with the MCG has run) that there has to be one Preliminary final at the MCG. Therefore the only way to truly "earn" a home final is to come first and win in the first week of the finals (or be a Melbourne based team, finish 1,2,3 or 4 and win the first week of the finals). Surely they all know this and so can't claim they "deserve" a home final! If there not happy, don't show up in protest!

But really the AFL (and we all know the Explosion is in their pocket so he will probably defend them on this issue) are as much to blame as the interstate clubs and the mejar in this for not writing the rules of the game as such! Surely the rules of the game should say something like:

"Earning a home Prelim: The highest finishing side that wins the first week of the finals automatically wins a home Prelim. If the highest ranked side is a Victorian based team, the next highest rank side will also get a home prelim."

There's always complaints that finishing first earns no rewards, but surely this system is the ultimate reward for finishing first!

Surely something like this ends the debate and fixes up the fiasco that is run by the interstate sides and the mejar that is allowed to go on by the AFL because they don't have the balls to put this right.

Rex Hunt in hot water for storm in a Tea Cup

AFL's greatest commentator/entertainer (and I am not talking of Eddie or Sam), Rex Hunt, has gotten himself in hot water over a passage of commentary from Friday nights game. The following article is from The Age: Hunt apologises for racial 'stuff up' - Realfooty.:

Hunt, who has a reputation for using a lot of slang and nicknames in his commentary, said: "Neon Leon hasn't lit up tonight, he's as black as a dog's..."

Hunt then trailed off as play continued before commenting that the night sky was "...as black as a dog, oh, I stuffed it up, I'll have a rest, I knew it was going to happen.''

From this alone you could be forgive for thinking that Rex was really being raciest but a full listen to the Audio (and I had the chance this morning to hear it) showed that Rex was going at a million miles an hour and was just trying to throw out his normal comment (the article makes it sound like the comment was only used earlier on the night, in fact Rex uses it often), Its as Black as a dogs guts. He normally uses this comment to refer to rain clouds or mud or the amount of light. From my listening he was trying use this and the nickname of Leon Davis, Neon (as in neon lights) and just got his mouth moving to quick.

Once he realized what he was saying he stopped and took a break. To me Rex does some silly things but you can't fault his attitude in this manner. He rang around to find Davis's number and tried 5 times to call him to apologies. He also (as stated in the article) that he would wear anything that came his way from this. How many people do that these days.

The Bait man is off fishing - Chance Bateman out for the season
